Statement from MLA Michelle Mungall on Kootenay Lake Ferry Service August 29, 2019

NELSON – “Service reduction for our Kootenay Lake ferry is never ideal, and I know both the employer and employees would have preferred to avoid this dispute. I appreciate that this will pose a hardship for many Kootenay residents and travelers. It is my hope and desire that both parties will return to the bargaining table and reach an agreement soon.

“Until an agreement is reached, we must all respect their right to a free collective bargaining process. The independent Labour Relations Board is overseeing the strike action and service level for Kootenay Lake ferries. Under the law and nature of the contracted service, the provincial government is not and cannot be at the bargaining table nor can it force either party to the table or back to work.

“Message boards in Nelson and Creston have been updated to reflect the service disruption, and people are encouraged to continue to check DriveBC.ca and @DriveBC on Twitter for the most up-to-date travel information. Also do not hesitate to contact my office for further information.

“I look forward to a resolution that’s good for everyone and keeps people in the Kootenays moving.”
